Rock the Vote (for health)

My work submitted a grant to Prevent Cancer Foundation on reducing colorectal cancer rates in Eastern Washington - and we need your vote! There are 19 organizations vying for the grant money, and only 5 of them will move on to the next round. In order to move on to the next round, we need votes from people like you. Voting takes place until April 30. Even if you don't live in Eastern Washington, you can still support the work my organization is doing and vote for us. You can vote here.  They do make you sign up for an account, but it takes like three seconds. You can count it as your humanitarian good deed for the day. My work's grant is titled "Reducing Colorectal Cancer Rates with 85210" and focuses on preventing/reducing obesity rates and getting people active to help prevent colorectal cancer.

All the grants up there look pretty interesting, and all serve the greater purpose of reducing colorectal cancer rates. In case you didn't know (and since I'm a health educator and I'm all about educating folks on health issues), colorectal cancer is largely a preventable cancer. Eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, and reducing your red meat intake, being in a healthy weight range, and exercising regularly help reduce your risk for colorectal cancer. Getting a colonoscopy once you are 50 (or earlier if you have a family history or are African American) can literally prevent cancer. How is this done?? When you are getting the colonoscopy, the doctor can remove pre-cancerous polyps and get rid of the cancer before it even becomes cancer. How cool is that?? If you are 50 or older (or if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or are African American), then make sure to talk to your healthcare provider about getting a colonoscopy to screen for colorectal cancer. There I did my educatin' for today.

Please share this with your friends and make them vote as well. This is an important cause - colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer, and the third leading cause of cancer death in the US. Make sure to vote! If you want to share with your friends, you can send them here to this site directly: http://screeningsaves.org/entry/reducing-colorectal-cancer-risk-with-85210/
